Time 4 Learning

Speaking of home schooling.......

"I've been invited to try Time4Learning for a month in exchange for a candid review. Their online program can be used for homeschool, as an after school tutorial and for summer learning. My opinion will be my own, so come back and read about my experience. You can write your own curriculum review, too!"

That's the official plug I'm supposed to publish. So there it is. Seriously, I've been wanting to try this out for awhile, but haven't made the leap. I hope it works out well. I'd love to be able to turn Leah loose on the site. She loves working online.

Everything Sad is Coming Untrue

Stealing the title of a Jason Grey song today. It fits pretty perfectly, though. In the three years or so since I've updated this blog I have:

(1) Started homeschooling my kids. Kara's now in 3rd and Leah's in 1st. When I first created this blog Kara was a toddler and Leah was just a few months old. I can't believe it!! This is our third year homeschool and I'm starting to get the hang of things ;-)

(2) Gone back to a brick-and-mortar church. Really. Leah wanted to go to Sunday School *so badly* and I felt like a heel constantly telling her no. I mean what harm can it do right? So, for the last year and a half we've been going fairly regularly. This has been a complicated experience for me, but that's okay. Things are working themselves out. It's taken a very long time, but I finally feel comfortable there.

(3) Turned 40. I tried V-8 for the first time a few months ago and think it's delicious. I'm pretty sure that proves that I've turned the corner from "young and cool" to middle aged :)

'There are no pockets in a shroud.'

"He wears a $15 watch, flies economy class and does not own a house or car. For years. few guessed that Chuck Feeney was one of the world's biggest philanthropists, secretly giving away his billionaire fortune...

Inspired by the great 19th century philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Feeney helped fund schools, hospitals, universities, medical research and human rights from the United States and Ireland to South Africa and Vietnam...

The Atlantic Philanthropies, co-founded by Feeney, has given away $4 billion in a quarter of a century, including over $2 billion in the United States, more than $1 billion in Ireland, as well as large sums in Vietnam, Australia, South Africa, Thailand and Cuba, according to O'Clery's book.

Now in his mid 70s, Feeney is determined his foundation should spend its remaining fortune in his lifetime and is fond of a Gaelic proverb to explain the sense of urgency.

'There are no pockets in a shroud.' "

"The Wise Woman's Stone"

This Indian parable beautifully illustrates the concepts of witness and mission:

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation.

The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.

"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

(from a collection of stories complied by Arthur Lenehan and quoted in The Sociopath Next Door)
